The weekend's upon us, summer's in full swing and if you’re enjoying it like me it may involve cooling down at a bbq backyard party with an icy cold beverage. But with all of the summer events that seem to fill our calendars, it can become quite the marathon of summer drinking. So what is the healthier solution?
Whether you’re looking for a brief break from alcohol, you’re the DD, you’re pregnant, or taking a summer detox...I have the drink for you that still has you feeling like part of the party! Avoiding alcohol at a party may have you wanting to dodge the common Q: "Why aren’t you drinking?" If so, here is my solution to the dead give-away-bottle-of-water scenario: The Faux Mojito.
Living on a Caribbean island for 9 years made drinking non-alcoholic beverages a nightmare for me. People who live on islands seem to never understand the concept of drinking non-alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is part of the island culture and I do love a good cocktail...but the lifestyle can become indulgent very quickly. Often enough when you were caught with a bottle of water in hand instead of a cold beer or cocktail, you were to withstand an inquisition to make even the Spanish faint of heart. It was enough to make you reconsider even showing up to the party.
So I came up with my Faux Mojito to bring with me. Even at my own birthday one year I drank this instead and no one was the wiser. I didn’t have to endure any questions (which let’s be honest is not only exhausting to answer but also nobody’s business) and I woke up the next day feeling fabulous.
With the heat of summer, you want something that is refreshing. I love mint and I love lime juice. The Cubans really knew what they were doing when they brought these two together in this cocktail.
This version uses fresh watermelon but if you want an original Mojito version just omit it. It’s one less step to worry about, but if you love watermelon and the hydration it's known for then go for it! Let's face it, summer and watermelon are pretty much synonymous so why not boost up your party drink. To sweeten this drink I use honey but if you don't like honey or can't consume it, maple syrup is a great alternative. The aloe vera gel is my own touch. It's also optional but it's a great way to really cool down from the inside out as it has anti-inflammatory properties. It's also great for pulling toxins out of the intestinal tract while adding vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and anti-oxidants! It's a great addition to your faux mojito if you're looking for a truly healthy party drink that doesn't use alcohol and looks pretty fancy.
- the juice of half a lime
- 1 tsp honey
- 6-8 mint leaves
- 1-2 oz aloe vera gel (optional)
- ¼ cup watermelon pureed in a blender (optional)
- 1 cup Perrier water
Mix the lime juice with honey (or maple syrup). Muddle the mint in the mixture. Stir in aloe gel if using (I only use this if detoxing or wanting to reduce inflammation in the gut). Add watermelon puree. Top with Perrier and stir. Serve.
Make in advance: You can mix a larger batch of the lime and honey mixture ahead of time and pour into a mason jar so you don’t have to be squeezing limes and mixing honey every time you want to make a drink. It’s a huge time saver and easy to bring to a party. I swear I made this drink for friends who were drinking alcoholic beverages and wanted this instead. It was also a HUGE hit with my pregnant friends.
Now no one will ever question why you’re not drinking. Gone are the tedious conversations explaining your drink choices or lack thereof. If you’re trying to hide a pregnancy in the first trimester or still want to enjoy your drinks while detoxing this is your summer WIN. In fact, people will probably be envious of your drink and ask you for your recipe. Tell them to add rum if they expect alcohol.
Have a great weekend and enjoy this healthier option all summer long!
Love and expansion,
